The role of President or Chair of an association or not-for-profit organisation is one of the most demanding leadership positions in the
sector.
In many organisations, the President is a volunteer who has stepped into the role because of their commitment, professional experience or knowledge of the industry. However, they may have received little guidance on how to lead a diverse Board of volunteers, manage difficult issues and ensure the Board remains focused on achieving the best outcomes for the organisation.
A President is expected to lead the Board, support the CEO, manage competing personalities, address conflicts and ensure Directors understand their responsibilities. At the same time, they must avoid becoming too involved in operational matters or assuming powers that do not belong to the role.
This practical workshop will examine what effective association Presidents and Chairs should be doing to facilitate a Board culture in which Directors contribute, accept responsibility and work together — and some of the common mistakes that can undermine Board performance.

Masterclass Workshop Facilitator: Peter Daly
Peter Daly is an Association Executive Services Consultant with extensive experience in Board leadership, governance, risk and organisational oversight. Peter is currently President and Chair of Incolink, Australia’s oldest and largest workers’ entitlement scheme, with more than $1.5 billion under management. He has served as an Incolink Director since 2021 and was previously a member of its Audit and Risk Committee. He is also Co-Chair of BuildSkills Australia, the national Jobs and Skills Council for the construction, property and water sectors, and a Director of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research.
Peter brings current, practical experience of chairing complex organisations, managing diverse stakeholder interests and ensuring Boards remain focused on governance, strategy and organisational performance. This will not be a theoretical discussion about governance. It will be a practical examination of what it really takes to lead an association or not-for-profit Board effectively.
