The Victorian Council of Social Service is the peak body for the social and community sector in Victoria. VCOSS members reflect the diversity of the sector and include large charities, peak organisations, small community services, advocacy groups and individuals interested in social policy. In addition to supporting the sector, VCOSS represents the interests of Victorians experiencing poverty and disadvantage, and advocates for the development of a sustainable, fair and equitable society.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is a high-profile role with influence that reports to the Board of VCOSS. The CEO will lead a talented, passionate and committed team to deliver campaigns and policy submissions advocating for strategic, high-impact social policy change that aims to end poverty and disadvantage. With ambitious plans to increase the impact and influence of VCOSS’s work, the CEO will lead the organisation tackling systemic social issues that make life hard for vulnerable Victorians, whilst building support for policy change by broadening the social service stakeholder ecosystem.
The Chief Executive Officer of VCOSS is a position of privilege with influence and impact. It’s a job for a highly experienced policy thinker and thought leader, with a track record of influencing and shaping social policy direction, with a deep understanding of the machinery of government and social issues. The role has a broad variety of responsibilities, working with a diverse number of stakeholders, from members, partners and other peak bodies, through to senior bureaucrats and Ministerial offices. The role is demanding but highly rewarding, with a high public profile and platform to work across a variety of projects and programs to further the objectives of VCOSS.
You will need a relevant tertiary qualification, strong public policy skills and a passion for advancing the cause of vulnerable Victorians. To be a strong contender, you’ll have experience in leading organisations and inspiring staff, with a sharp, strategic mind and the ability to cut through complexity and distil it into impactful messages that influence. With sophisticated communication skills, you’ll be able to build effective stakeholder relationships that enhance the profile and reputation of VCOSS, as well as the personal gravitas to speak persuasively with a wide variety of audiences, including Ministers, governments, business leaders and peak body groups. You’ll need ‘political nous’, knowing what issues to focus on, as well as the integrity to argue with a straight bat without fear or favour.
