General Surgeons Australia (GSA) is the professional body representing Specialist General Surgeons in Australia. As a non-profit, fellowship-based organisation, GSA exists to ensure the provision of high quality, comprehensive general surgical services to all Australians from emergency to planned procedures.
  
GSA supports the profession through education, advocacy, research, audit, and specialist training initiatives. It works in collaboration with medical colleges, governments, and health stakeholders to position general surgery as a respected and sustainable career pathway, while advancing workforce planning and the highest standards of care.

About the Role
Reporting to the GSA Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for leading the strategic, governance, and advocacy functions of the organisation, ensuring alignment with GSA’s mission to promote excellence in surgical care, education, and workforce planning.
  
The CEO works closely with the Board and the Deputy CEO/Director of Operations to deliver strategic priorities and support day to day operations. This includes oversight of key areas such as finance, HR, events, partnerships, and special projects - while actively contributing to stakeholder engagement and policy influence at both national and regional levels.
  
This is a unique leadership opportunity to influence the future of surgical services in Australia and drive meaningful outcomes for members, the health system, and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities
  
Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Lead the development and delivery of GSA’s strategic plan in partnership with the Board
  • Provide timely, high level advice to the Board on opportunities and risks
  • Uphold strong governance and regulatory compliance across the organisation

Operations & Financial Management

  • Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and operational performance
  • Support the delivery of events, training, and member programs
  • Ensure alignment between day to day operations and long term strategic objectives

Advocacy & External Relations

  • Represent GSA to governments, health stakeholders, and external partners
  • Advocate for funding, workforce planning, and policy outcomes aligned with general surgical needs
  • Build productive relationships with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, state governments, and medical associations

Stakeholder Engagement & Member Value

  • Engage with members to understand needs and deliver value-added initiatives
  • Ensure effective communication across all platforms and member touchpoints
  • Promote inclusion, diversity, and collaboration across surgical specialties and regions

Workforce & Education

  • Support the development of education and training pathways in general surgery
  • Contribute to research, audit, and professional development programs
  • Partner on workforce initiatives to ensure the sustainability of the profession

About You

  • Proven senior leadership experience, ideally in a healthcare, member-based, or policy focused organisation
  • Strong governance, operational, and financial management skills
  • Deep understanding of advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and healthcare systems
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with medical professionals and build trust across diverse groups
  • A strategic mindset, sound judgement, and a value led approach

Governance qualifications (e.g. AICD) and experience in not-for-profit or professional membership organisations will be highly regarded.
